Creative ConneXions: My Generation

This year’s Creative ConneXions theme had a lovely feel-good factor to it. The show, entitled My Generation, took place at the end of term and was a fantastic celebration of art, music, dance and poetry. Essentially, the show was a look back through decades of pop music. Once the children knew which pieces of music they had been assigned, they were encouraged to work in pairs and groups to choreograph parts of the dance for themselves.

The show opened with DJ Jack and Sienna introducing the music awards ceremony to the music of Spandau Ballet’s Gold, which set the scene beautifully. Dance Club then went straight into a colourful, vibrant dance to Let Me Entertain You by Robbie Williams.  Year Three performed a dazzling dance to the 1920s song, The Charleston.

In contrast, the Year Four Dance featured Elvis, in Jail House Rock sprinkled with a bit of the Glen Miller Band’s In the Mood.  The children had great fun learning how to waltz and jive.

The Year Five Dances were the from the 1960s and 1970s, with music from The Beatles, Queen, Slade and The Jam.  Dance Club had tremendous fun dancing in their 1970s disco dance; John Travolta was certainly their inspiration. Finally, Year Six performed brilliantly in their respective dances from the 1980s, 90s and present day. The dances featured music from Madonna, Take That, The Spice Girls and Dua Lipa, to mention a few.

The final medley of songs, Who Wants to Live Forever, Don’t Go Breaking My Heart, Rocky and Dancing Queen, was sung enthusiastically by the whole school. It summed up this year’s Creative ConneXions beautifully.

During the Dress Rehearsal, a troupe of staff dancers demonstrated to the pupils in audience the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone. There were shrieks of delight and plenty of cheering from the pupils when the staff members took to the stage, which was a brilliant example of confidence and resilience for all the children to witness.

The artwork in the gallery was stunning, and the poetry which the children had written supported the chosen theme superbly. It was a wonderful evening and one that will we hope will stay in the hearts of those who took part for a very long time.
