Exploring Perimeter and Area with LEGO
Year 5 pupils enjoyed a hands-on mathematics lesson using LEGO bricks to explore the concepts of perimeter and area. Using the bricks, they built a variety of rectangles and rectilinear shapes before calculating both the perimeter and the area of the shapes they had created.
The pupils also used their mathematical knowledge to work out unknown side lengths, applying their understanding of number and measurement to solve different problems.
This practical activity helped the children to visualise the shapes more clearly and see how perimeter and area work in a real context. It also encouraged problem-solving, discussion and collaboration as pupils explored different ways to build and measure their shapes.
It was a fantastic way to bring mathematics to life while deepening the pupils’ understanding of these important concepts.
