Exploring Portraits Through History in Year 6 Art

Year 6 pupils have begun an exciting new Art topic exploring the development of portraiture throughout European history. As part of their studies, pupils have been learning how portraits have changed and evolved from the Middle Ages through to the Renaissance and beyond, discovering how different artists and artistic movements have influenced portrait styles over time.

Pupils have explored the work of famous Renaissance artists including Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, using their techniques and attention to detail as inspiration for their own carefully observed pencil portrait drawings. Alongside this, pupils have also begun experimenting with a very different artistic style by creating bold and expressive Picasso-inspired portraits using oil pastels.

As the topic continues, Year 6 will explore a variety of portrait styles and genres right through to the 21st century, developing their artistic skills while gaining a deeper understanding of how art has reflected society and culture throughout history.

It has been wonderful to see pupils approaching their work with such creativity, focus, and enthusiasm.
