Exploring the Animal Kingdom in Year 1
Year 1 have been learning how to group and classify animals in their science lessons. They listened carefully as they explored the special features of each animal group and learned about what makes mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and insects unique. The pupils then rose to the challenge of sorting a range of animals into the correct groups, using their growing knowledge to make thoughtful decisions.
There were many purposeful and thoughtful discussions throughout the lessons, with pupils explaining which animals belonged in each group and confidently sharing their reasons why. These conversations demonstrated a developing understanding of animal characteristics and encouraged pupils to use scientific vocabulary accurately, such as scales, feathers, fur and gills.
The learning continued beyond the science lessons, with pupils enjoying time exploring a range of non-fiction animal books in the classroom. They showed great curiosity as they searched for facts, asked questions and shared interesting information with their peers. This learning inspired some wonderful creative outcomes, including painting and drawing animals from each group, allowing pupils to combine their scientific knowledge with their artistic skills.
It has been fantastic to see such enthusiasm and engagement throughout the topic. Well done Year 1, for your excellent attitudes to learning and the effort you have put into your science work.
