Explosive Learning for Year 4 Volcanoes Come to Life

This term, the children embarked on an exciting cross-curricular project that combined Science and Geography, exploring the fascinating world of volcanoes.

Using their creativity and problem-solving skills, the children designed and built their own volcano models. We even had an amazing volcano cakes and a superb informative poster model. The children carefully considered the shape and structure of real volcanoes, learning about different volcanic features and how volcanoes are formed through movements within the Earth’s crust.

The excitement reached new heights when it was time to create our eruptions! Donning their goggles and using a safe chemical reaction (using bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and food colouring), the children watched in amazement as their volcanoes bubbled, fizzed, and erupted. This hands-on investigation helped them understand how volcanic eruptions occur and allowed them to observe scientific changes in action.

Throughout the project, pupils developed their geographical knowledge by locating famous volcanoes around the world, learning about tectonic plates, and investigating how volcanoes can shape landscapes and impact communities. In science lessons, they explored reactions, observation skills, prediction-making, and recording their findings.

The project sparked a tremendous amount of curiosity, wonder, and fascination. The children asked thoughtful questions, shared ideas enthusiastically, and demonstrated excellent teamwork while creating and testing their models. It was wonderful to see their excitement as classroom learning was brought to life through practical experiences.

This engaging project not only deepened the children’s understanding of volcanoes but also encouraged them to think like scientists and geographers, inspiring a lifelong love of learning and discovery.

What a fantastic eruption of creativity, curiosity, and learning!
