Fraction Fun with Top Trumps in Year 5
In maths this week, Year 5 pupils have been building their understanding of how to find fractions of amounts, using a creative and engaging approach to bring their learning to life. They drew on their secure times tables knowledge to divide by the denominator and, when needed, multiply by the numerator, applying this method confidently and accurately to a range of problems.
To make the learning even more enjoyable, pupils took part in a game of Alien Top Trumps, which proved to be a huge hit. Through the game, they were able to practise their fraction skills in a fun, interactive way, while also developing their reasoning and problem-solving abilities. Working collaboratively, pupils discussed strategies, checked each other’s thinking and explained their answers, helping to deepen their understanding.
Using games and creative activities like this helps to make maths both accessible and enjoyable, and it was wonderful to see the enthusiasm, focus and confidence shown by everyone. A great week of imaginative and effective maths learning in Year 5.
