Learning fun at Lower Smite Farm
On Wednesday, Year Three had a fantastic day at Lower Smite Farm. The children started the morning by impressing the staff with their knowledge of the names and functions of teeth. They then worked in groups to identify different teeth in a selection of animal skulls and, from their knowledge of the jobs of each type of tooth, they became detectives, attempting to work out to which animals the skulls might belong. These ranged from the tiny skull of a mouse to the large skull of a horse.
Pulling on wellies and keeping their fingers crossed that the heavens wouldn’t open, they then ventured into the woods, where they continued to discover a plethora of facts about animal teeth. They loved finding out how hedgehog teeth are designed to shovel their food, and they became hedgehogs, hunting for various insects (or at least pictures of them!) hidden among the trees, and scooping them up in their “hedgehog jaws”, made of two forks tied together with elastic bands!
After a much needed lunch, the children moved on to look at food groups and the important jobs of each. They also took a trip to the Lower Smite Farm vegetable garden, where they had a great time pulling up vegetables and discussing how important worms are for the soil. They then became worm charmers, tapping on garden forks to imitate raindrops, encouraging the worms to come to the top of the soil to be counted.
The weather held out all day, only deciding to rain when we arrived back at school! A fun-filled and informative day was had by all. Thank you, Lower Smite Farm!
