Inspiring Young Composers: Year 5 and 6 Workshop for The Armed Man

On Monday afternoon, our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils were treated to a truly inspiring music workshop with Christopher Monks, conductor of the Armonico Consort Choir. Adding to the excitement, they were joined, virtually all the way from Chicago, by renowned composer Andrew Wainwright.

The focus of the afternoon was on composition and creativity, as pupils worked together to craft text that will form part of three interludes to be performed at The Armed Man concert on 27th November. Guided by Christopher, the children explored the themes and emotions behind different sections of the piece, discussing how the music made them feel and how words could reflect its power and meaning.

There was a real buzz of imagination in the room as pupils experimented with words, rhythm, and tone, finding ways to express ideas of peace, hope, and reflection through their writing. They also had the opportunity to sing with Christopher, proudly showcasing how much progress they’ve made in rehearsals this term.

Christopher was deeply impressed by the children’s creativity, musical insight, and thoughtful responses to such a profound piece of music. He commented on the richness of their ideas and is eager to see how these will shape the final performance.

To build on the workshop’s momentum, a half-term competition has been launched for all Year 5 and 6 pupils. The challenge? To compose their own text inspired by The Armed Man, with winning entries to be performed during the concert. Full details can be found on Showbie, in each class’s Music folder, under ‘The Armed Man Competition’.

This collaboration between pupils, professionals, and composers offers a wonderful opportunity for our young musicians to see how their creative voices can become part of something truly special.
