Jonny Hunt tackles teen issues

Year 5 and 6 PSHE: Why do we grow up?

We were delighted to welcome Jonny Hunt back to KSA on Wednesday afternoon to lead sessions with our Year 5 and 6 pupils. Linking aspects of Health Education and RSE with Science, the children shared what they already knew about puberty and learnt how hormones are responsible for mood swings, spots, growth spurts, changing body shapes, hair in new places…in fact, just about everything that happens during puberty!

All the children engaged well and listened carefully to Jonny and each other, showing respect for the thoughts and feelings they shared. We explored some gender stereotypes (for example, why don’t people say, “woman up?”) and there was much debate over whether boys or girls are stronger…

Jonny reassured the children that we are all different and that changes don’t happen in a set order; we shouldn’t worry about our bodies changing and must try not to compare ourselves with others. Even more importantly, we thought about how we should be kind to each other (a great link to one of this term’s Growth Mindset words). Puberty is a natural journey through which everyone goes. Encouraging our children to talk to safe adults when they have questions or when they’re feeling worried, mixed up or overwhelmed is also key; looking after our children’s mental health will help smooth their journey to adulthood.

So, if you have a Year 5 or 6 pupil in your house, why not ask them what amazing things their bodies can do? As Jonny said, “Your bodies are the best piece of kit you’ll ever have!”
