Junk Drumming Workshop Challenges Year 3

On Thursday, Year Three enjoyed a Junk Drumming Workshop led by Nick Ledbury from the Glamba Theatrical Percussion Group. This was part of their “Instruments of the Orchestra” topic for this term, and was designed to develop their experience of how sound can be produced.

It was an incredibly lively and interactive session, and the children (and staff!) didn’t stop smiling throughout. They learned that, with just a little imagination, many everyday items can be transformed into percussion instruments. Pots, pans, water-butts, hosepipes and dustbin lids were just a few of the ‘instruments’ they played. Working together, they learned how to “rumble” and used word rhythms to build up a complex piece inspired by Brazilian Samba. There were further additions to the final piece that included the famous We Will Rock You drum rhythm and some very creative dance moves!

Nick was blown away by the children’s commitment, focus and enthusiasm, not to mention their willingness to tidy up after each activity!

This has really inspired them to experiment and explore their environment for new and exciting musical instruments. Lock your kitchen cupboards from now on!
