Embracing the ‘MAGIC’ of Wellbeing for Children’s Mental Health Week

This week, King’s Hawford celebrated Children’s Mental Health Week (3rd-7th February) with a series of engaging activities designed to promote wellbeing and self-awareness.

Using the school’s MAGIC mnemonic—Mindful, Active, Generous, Interested, Connected—children explored this year’s theme: Know Yourself, Grow Yourself.

The initiative aimed to help children develop self-awareness, recognise their strengths, and learn to manage their emotions. Throughout the week, each day highlighted a different aspect of wellbeing:

  • Monday – Be Mindful: Children took part in a well-being scavenger hunt and a self-awareness trail to encourage mindfulness. A designated ‘chill out zone’ provided a space for quiet, mindful reflection.
  • Tuesday – Be Active: The school day began with a ‘wake and shake’ session on the hard surface, followed by physical challenges at breaktimes. Movement helped children build self-awareness and boost their energy.
  • Wednesday – Be Generous: Acts of kindness took center stage, with children participating in a copper and silver trail to raise money for charity. Additionally, they donated packs of pencils and pencil crayons to support children at partner schools in The Gambia.
  • Thursday – Be Interested: A day for learning new skills, children had the opportunity to try something different—whether it was origami, sign language, magic tricks, or even learning to tie shoelaces—with guidance from teachers and older pupils.
  • Friday – Be Connected: The week concluded with a focus on community, encouraging children to come together to play, collaborate, and express gratitude.

Through these activities, King’s Hawford empowered children with valuable life skills while reinforcing the importance of wellbeing.
