King’s Hawford spirit at heart of House Cross Country

Last week’s House Cross Country embodied everything that makes King’s Hawford special. Every single pupil from Kindergarten 2 to Year 6 took part and ran to score points for their House.  We witnessed great athleticism on our sports pitches, alongside exceptional camaraderie and sportsmanship.

The first children to assemble on the top field were from Kindergarten 2, wrapped up in coats, hats and wellies and excited to take part in their very first House Cross Country race. The accompanying staff did not look as excited as the children! As the Kindergarten children were completing their run, Reception arrived and were on hand to cheer the younger children and Kindergarten staff across the finish line.

Throughout the afternoon the different age groups of children streamed onto the top field, ready to take part. Mr Hodgkins made it clear that everyone who ran would be earning vital points for their House, whether they came first or not. This ensured that the spirit of inclusivity of which we are extremely proud at King’s Hawford was at the forefront of the event.

The races were timed so that there was a constant stream of supporters watching each race and all competitors were cheered around the course. Several staff members were also on hand to run with the children and help, guide and encourage as needed. It was wonderful to have a strong contingent of parents in attendance throughout the afternoon. The children lit up with delight as they spotted familiar faces in the crowd.

Congratulations to the winners of each race. They showed true grit and determination on a very cold day.

In today’s assembly Mr Hodgkins also recognised two pupils who embodied the true King’s Hawford spirit. Both of these young ladies were commended for their amazing attitude and the way they supported and encouraged those around them. Well done to Fearne B and Olivia W on their star awards.

Beyond the tremendous achievements of our winners, the highlight of this year’s cross country was witnessing the way the whole school community came together and supported each and every pupil. Seeing those who had finished jogging back to help and encourage others, and older pupils running alongside younger ones to support them was wonderful to witness.

Well done King’s Hawford!
