U11 Football Tournament (Matty Thacker) Win for King’s Hawford

On Wednesday 23rd January the Kings Hawford U11 Football team competed in the annual Matthew Thacker Tournament that is held every year in memory of the Year 6 child from Winterfold School; whom the shield is named after. The tournament is a marquee event in the local Independent School sports calendar with 14 schools competing from across Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Birmingham, Warwickshire, Shropshire and Gloucestershire.

In 2019 King’s Hawford U11’s won the shield but this year the team secured an even better result.

Read our report below from Director of Sport, Mr Hodgkins.

King’s Hawford were placed in a very competitive and tight group against a number of strong teams. Having won six of the four group matches, including a highly impressive 4-0 victory over group leaders Hereford Cathedral School, we finished 3rd and therefore qualified for the semi-finals of the Cup competition.

The boys performed excellently in the semi-final against Moor Park and a Tom J hat trick secured a 3-0 victory and, with it, our place in the final.

The final of the cup saw us pitted against the host school Winterfold. This was a very close and competitive match which finished 0-0. Following a period of extra time the sides still could not be separated and so the match went to a penalty shootout.

After five penalties each the scores were still tied at 3-3 thanks to some impressive penalty saves from goalkeeper Jack F. Jack again pulled off a good save to deny Winterfold’s sixth penalty leaving Ben E with the chance to score the winning penalty for Hawford. Ben stepped up and confidently slotted the ball past the goalkeeper and into the bottom left hand corner.

Director of Sport, Mr Hodgkins summarised the afternoon; “It was a brilliant afternoon of football hosted by Winterfold School. Our boys played fantastically, with real energy and determination. They worked so very hard to gain a well-deserved victory in the cup competition. We are really proud of the effort that they put in on the pitch and also in the lead up to the U11 Football Tournament.”
