Sport Highlights: Rugby and Hockey Showcases Talent and Teamwork

This week King’s St Alban’s pupils showcased their skills, teamwork and determination across rugby and hockey fixtures. From U8’s and U9’s developing their game to U11’s competing in tournaments, it was a week full of energy, effort and memorable performances.

Tuesday 18th November

U8 Rugby at Winterfold

The U8s continued their steady week-on-week progress at the Winterfold Rugby Festival, producing an excellent display of teamwork, determination, and improving rugby skills. It was great to see the boys growing in confidence and putting into practice the areas they’ve been working on in training.

Wilf and Theo both stood out in attack, using their speed and agility to glide through gaps in the opposition line and finish with well-taken tries. Their footwork caused problems for defences all morning and gave the team real momentum going forward. In defence, Ben, Sam, and Ivan impressed with their discipline and organisation. They held a strong defensive line, moved up together, and made some key tags that helped slow down opposition attacks and win back possession. Their teamwork without the ball was a real highlight.

Mikaeel produced one of the standout moments of the festival with an excellent solo try in the opening game beating several defenders before accelerating down the touchline and grounding the ball confidently. Xander and Rory made important contributions in the build-up play, showing good awareness and accuracy with their passing when starting the moves off.

Overall, it was a hugely encouraging performance from the whole squad. The boys showed great spirit, supported each other well, and demonstrated real improvement across all areas of the game. Plenty to build on as the season continues!

U8/U9 Hockey v The Elms

After an unexpected detour around the Malvern Hills due to road closures! The teams arrived ready to play. Both A and B squads showed great determination throughout the matches against strong opposition from The Elms. Despite the challenging start, the girls worked hard to maintain their structure and keep the game competitive. A special mention goes to Olivia, who demonstrated fantastic perseverance, moving tirelessly between defensive positions to support her team. Although The Elms ultimately secured the wins, our players displayed resilience and teamwork, which will serve them well in future fixtures. Well done to everyone involved!

Wednesday 19th November

U11 IAPS Rugby at Ratcliffe

The U11s enjoyed a fantastic day of rugby at Ratcliffe College, taking part in the IAPS tournament with a brilliant opportunity to join forces with King’s Hawford and form a combined King’s Worcester team. From the outset, the boys represented the school superbly, showing skill, teamwork and resilience throughout a demanding programme of fixtures.

Across the day, the squad played seven matches, winning six and losing just one, with a try in the final seconds. A tremendous achievement against strong opposition drawn from across the Midlands. They faced Laxton, Leicester Grammar, The Elms Nottingham, Fairfield, Blue Coat Birmingham, Nottingham High and the hosts, Ratcliffe. In ice-cold, windy conditions, the boys showed outstanding character and determination, and their rugby improved with every game as their confidence and cohesion grew.

There were many moments to celebrate. Zack carried the ball with great strength, consistently gaining ground and putting the team on the front foot. Adam and Ben produced some lovely jinking runs that caused real problems for opposition defenders. Max worked tirelessly throughout, contributing brilliantly in both attack and defence, while Hugo set the tone physically with some enormous tackles and powerful carries. Joshua made an impact when he came on. It was also wonderful to see Pip demonstrate fantastic team spirit and commitment, travelling with the squad to support the boys and contributing to the positive atmosphere around the group.

Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day, one the boys can be incredibly proud of. Their attitude, teamwork and willingness to give everything for one another were clear to see. Well done to all involved, and a big thank you to the parents who made the long journey to cheer the boys on.

U11/U10 B Hockey v Moor Park

The U11/U10 B team put on a fantastic display of effort and teamwork in Wednesday’s match. From the first whistle, the girls showed determination and energy, keeping the game exciting throughout. Iris was superb, covering the pitch with relentless running and supporting both attack and defence brilliantly. In goal, Savannah was absolutely on fire—making save after save and keeping the team in the game with at least ten incredible stops. Her performance was outstanding and gave the team confidence to push forward. A huge well done to Henrietta, who really got stuck in today, running up and down the wing trying to gain possession of the ball. Her hard work earned her the well-deserved title of Player of the Match. Despite a tough contest, a loss of 1-0, the team should be proud of their resilience and positive attitude. Well done, girls!

U11/U10 A Hockey v Moor Park

The U11/U10 A team faced a strong Moor Park side in a challenging match. Despite the pressure, the girls worked hard and showed great determination throughout. Savannah stepped into defence and impressed once again with some excellent saves, keeping us in the game during key moments. Lillianna battled tirelessly to move the ball past their solid defensive line, but Moor Park proved difficult to break down and some good shape. While we had good possession, we spent too much time in the middle of the pitch and need to make better use of the wings to stretch play. Another key focus is ensuring sticks are grounded before tackles to improve defensive strength and avoid missed opportunities. Although the result didn’t go our way, the team demonstrated resilience and plenty of positives to build on for future matches. Well done to everyone for their effort and commitment and to Lillianna for being award Player of the Match!
