Music Corner: a round up of all things musical

Music Successes:

Congratulations to Isabella W on passing her ABRSM Grade 2 Violin Performance exam.

Congratulations to Benjamin L on passing his Grade 2 ‘Cello exam!

Woodwind demo and taster lessons:

Following Mrs Allsop’s woodwind instruments demonstration in assembly a fortnight ago, (featuring the flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone and bassoon) there are just a couple of spaces left, but if anyone would like a taster lesson before the summer, please email Mrs Hughes: shughes@ksw.org.uk. This is targeted at children in current Years Two to Five, and for the younger ones it helps enormously if they have their top two front teeth!

Anyone interested in beginning music lessons on any instrument in September might like a taster lesson before the summer holidays. Please contact Mrs Hughes to arrange.

Music Clubs and Hawford Harps:

In September, there will be space for just four children to join our harp group: Hawford Harps. This serene ensemble rehearses on Tuesdays from 4 to 5pm in the Music Room, and the club is open to children in Years Three to Six (the current Years Two to Five). There is a fee for the lessons, and the children will each be given a 16-string lap harp. Please contact Mrs Hughes to register your interest before the end of term. In addition, we will continue to offer Senior Choir, Junior Choir, Orchestra, Brass Group, Strings Group, and Woodwind Group. We hope there may be sufficient pupils for Guitar Group to resume.

Voluntary Choir visitor:

In an assembly last week we were treated to a delightful performance by the Years Three and Four children in Junior Choir, who sang two pieces from memory: Day Off! and Ocean Commotion. Some parents were there to watch and then to hear a talk given by Nicholas Freestone, Director of the Cathedral Voluntary Choir and Assistant Director of Music in Worcester Cathedral. He told everyone about the commitment and fun the children have, and explained how the different choirs support the services in the cathedral.  If any parents would like to receive further information about their child joining the Voluntary Choir, please email: NicholasFreestone@worcestercathedral.org.uk or Mrs Hughes: shughes@ksw.org.uk

Cathedral Choir successes:

Congratulations to ex-Hawfordians Florrie C and Zofia W (both Lower Fourth/Year 7 at KSW) on being offered the chance to become full choristers at Worcester Cathedral. This is a fantastic accolade, and they follow in the footsteps of several other Hawfordians over recent years.

Return of hired school instruments:

Year Six children and any school leavers or children stopping music lessons who currently hire school-owned instruments must return these directly to Mrs Hughes in the final week of term. Please contact Mrs Hughes with any questions.

Assembly performances:

Congratulations to String Group for their fabulous performance of a traditional Caribbean piece Tinga Layo in assembly on Wednesday, which brought a cheery start to the proceedings. Next Friday 30th June, school choir, orchestra and woodwind group will be performing in assembly and parents of the children are invited to attend at 8:45 am.
