Netballers take bronze at IAPS

An early start saw our U11 netballers heading to Rugby School, ready to show their ability following the new England Netball Beeball programme. After a light snack, the girls did a good warm-up and were ready to face Bablake and King Henry VIII school. It was a fairly end-to-end game in the first half, but they were soon into the rhythm of things and came away with a 6-3 victory. The next game, against Cheltenham College, couldn’t have been any closer. With one team getting one goal ahead, then the other pulling it back to draw, Hawford were unlucky to finish with a loss at 3-4. Milton Keynes Prep were next, and the girls were beginning to feel weary. Against a tall opposition, Hawford struggled to mark and thus block the continuous attack. Not feeling too defeated, their last game in the pool was against Berkhampstead Prep. They were certainly a well drilled team and proved too quick for us to catch.

Hawford found themselves in the Plate competition, having come third in the group. The first match was against Derby School and it was delight to see the girls spring into action. They were confident and sleek in their passing and they won 7-5, which put them through to the semi-final. They were to face Repton Prep and again, it proved to be an end-to-end game. The result could have gone either way, but Repton managed to pull away, wining 6-4. Not all was lost. We still had the 3rd/4th play-off to get through and, unbelievably, we were against King’s St. Alban’s. It was the most exciting game and there was absolutely nothing between the teams. 2-2 at full-time resulted in five minutes extra time awarded. Hawford managed to score and keep KSA at bay, resulting them winning 3-2.

They played well and it’s safe to say they were extremely pleased to receive a bronze medal. The whole school are incredibly proud that they never gave up but played to the best of their ability at all times.
