Nursery – Cygnets Group: A Magical Metamorphosis
This week, our youngest learners in the Nursery Cygnets Group have been on a truly exciting journey, exploring the life cycle of a caterpillar through the much-loved story The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.
To help bring the story to life, the children were introduced to their very own butterfly garden, where they had the opportunity to observe the incredible transformation from caterpillar to butterfly first-hand. The classroom was filled with awe and wonder as the caterpillars grew, formed chrysalides, and eventually emerged as beautiful butterflies.
This real-life experience gave the children a deeper understanding of the four key stages of the butterfly life cycle. Watching this transformation unfold before their eyes sparked endless curiosity and joy, and when it was finally time to release the butterflies, the excitement was truly infectious!
The children also extended their learning through a variety of creative activities, producing vibrant artwork inspired by the book and exploring the colours found in the story. They confidently identified and used the main colours featured in The Very Hungry Caterpillar, reinforcing their early colour recognition and fine motor skills through painting.
This hands-on experience has not only supported early scientific thinking and observation skills, but also encouraged language development, artistic expression, and emotional engagement. Most importantly, it has helped to foster a love of learning through meaningful, memorable experiences, something we value deeply at King’s St Alban’s. It’s a joy to watch our youngest learners grow, explore and thrive each day.
