Planting, Playing and Discovering in Forest School

Reception and Year 1 have thoroughly enjoyed their return to Forest School this term. There has been a real buzz of excitement as the children embraced the opportunity to explore, create, and learn in the great outdoors once again.

One of the highlights has been planting strawberry plants into the caterpillar’s wellies, adding a splash of green and life to the Forest School area. The children also showed wonderful creativity and fine motor skills as they crafted limpet shell wind chimes to hang inside the willow structure, giving the space a magical and musical feel.

Throughout their sessions, the children have immersed themselves in the natural environment, investigating signs of spring, using magnifying glasses to take a closer look at bluebells and other woodland plants. They worked collaboratively in the Mud Kitchen, mixing and experimenting with natural materials, while developing important social skills such as sharing, turn-taking, and communication.

Outdoor learning has played a key role in building the children’s confidence. They have relished the chance to take safe risks, try new activities, and problem-solve together. Whether climbing, balancing, creating, or investigating, each child has had the opportunity to develop resilience, independence, and a deeper connection with the natural world.

It has been a joy to see how being outdoors nurtures not only their physical skills, but also their curiosity, creativity, and self-esteem. We look forward to many more adventures in Forest School over the coming weeks!
