Pre-Prep Connects with Nature Through Mindfulness at Forest School
All of our Pre-Prep children recently enjoyed a special visit to Forest School, where they began their adventure with a calming mindfulness session. Before exploring the great outdoors, the pupils took time to slow down and tune into their surroundings, using their senses to connect deeply with nature.
Guided by their teachers, the children practised noticing:
-
5 things they could see—from leaves rustling in the breeze to tiny insects crawling on the bark
-
4 things they could hear—the gentle chirping of birds, the crackling of twigs underfoot, the rustle of leaves, and distant animal calls
-
3 things they could touch—the rough texture of tree bark, soft moss, and cool, smooth stones
-
2 things they could smell—fresh pine needles and damp earth
This simple yet powerful exercise helps children become more aware of the present moment, encouraging calmness and focus. It also strengthens their connection to the natural world, fostering a sense of curiosity, respect, and wellbeing.
Practising mindfulness outdoors supports emotional regulation, reduces anxiety, and boosts concentration, skills that benefit children both in school and everyday life. By tuning in to the sights, sounds, smells, and textures around them, our Pre-Prep pupils learned to appreciate the beauty and peace that nature offers.
Following this mindful start, the children eagerly embraced all the Forest School activities, exploring, learning, and enjoying their time in the fresh air.
Well done, Pre-Prep, on embracing mindfulness and nature with open hearts and curious minds!
