Reception’s Colourful Journey with Handa’s Surprise

This week, Reception have been on a vibrant adventure with the much-loved story Handa’s Surprise by Eileen Browne. The children have thrown themselves into the tale with great enthusiasm, sequencing the events beautifully and showing fantastic recall. We’ve also been so impressed with their growing fine motor skills as they carefully used scissors to cut and order the story pieces.

Our learning didn’t stop with the story itself. Reception have been finding out all about Africa, making thoughtful comparisons between Handa’s village and our own city of Worcester. The children noticed so many interesting differences and were full of curiosity and ideas.

One of the week’s highlights was fruit tasting on Wednesday. Mrs Thorp brought in all the delicious fruits from the story, and the children explored them with all five senses, looking closely at the colours, feeling the textures, smelling the scents, listening to the crunches and of course, tasting the flavours. We were so proud of how adventurous the children were, with many trying new fruits for the very first time, even if they decided it wasn’t to their taste.

To round off the week, the children expressed their creativity by painting their favourite fruits, filling the classroom with bright colours and imaginative artwork.

It has been a joyful week of storytelling, discovery and hands-on exploration and Reception have truly brought Handa’s Surprise to life!
