Science in Action: Exploring Evaporation in Year 6

This week, Year 6 have been developing their practical science skills by learning how to light a Bunsen burner and use it safely. Pupils were introduced to important laboratory safety rules and learned how to control the flame carefully, ensuring they worked responsibly and confidently throughout the lesson.

As part of their learning, pupils were also introduced to a range of new scientific equipment, including a tripod, gauze mat and evaporating basin. They discussed the purpose of each piece of equipment and how it is used during heating experiments.

Using this equipment, pupils carried out an investigation to evaporate water from a salt solution. By heating the solution, they observed the water evaporating and were left with salt that was very fine and powdery. Pupils then compared this result with salt crystals that had been formed when a salt solution was left to evaporate slowly on the classroom windowsill. This allowed them to clearly see the difference between fast and slow evaporation and how this affects the size and appearance of the crystals.

It was great to see pupils working carefully, making detailed observations and discussing their findings using scientific vocabulary. Well done Year 6, for your excellent focus and enthusiasm during this practical science lesson.
