Severn Shield Victory Sparks Inspiration Among King’s St Alban’s Pupils

In an exhilarating evening of sport, King’s Worcester 1st and 2nd hockey teams delivered outstanding performances against RGS Worcester, culminating in the 1st XI lifting the prestigious Severn Shield for the first time in two years after shared titles. Both teams showcased exceptional skill, determination, and teamwork on the newly resurfaced Astro pitch, cheered on by a large and supportive crowd.

A significant part of this success story is the participation of five former King’s St. Albans pupils, Amelia T, Izzy DS, Phoebe W, Martha B, and Liv K, highlighting the strength of talent nurtured within the King’s family. With a young squad leading the charge, this victory also serves as inspiration for current Year 6 pupils, who could be part of this competition in just a few short years.

The 1st XI set the tone from the opening whistle with a high-energy start, immediately putting RGS under pressure. A brilliant early run from Bryony created the first breakthrough, setting up Hermione to finish with a perfectly placed shot. King’s dominated possession throughout, stringing together fluid passes and launching repeated attacks. Captain Ruby doubled the lead, weaving through RGS defenders before expertly placing the ball in the bottom corner.

Despite a solid defensive effort from RGS, especially in handling short corners, King’s relentless pressing kept them on the back foot. Early in the second half, RGS managed to pull one goal back, but King’s remained composed, sticking to their game plan and building confidently from the back. The defence, bolstered by some exceptional tackling and disciplined positioning, held firm to prevent any further opportunities for RGS.

As the game drew to a close, King’s controlled possession expertly, managing the tempo and ensuring their opponents couldn’t mount any late comebacks. When the final whistle blew, King’s celebrated a well-earned 2-1 victory, lifting the Severn Shield amid cheers from friends, family, and the wider King’s community. The team’s triumph was even more memorable as the celebration continued in the pouring rain, a testament to their resilience and team spirit.

This win marks a special moment for the King’s hockey program, and with such young talent emerging throughout the foundation, the future looks incredibly bright. Congratulations to all involved!
