Severn Trent deliver animated Super Sewers assembly

On Thursday pupils in the Prep School received a visit from Severn Trent. The visitors from Severn Trent lead an assembly on Super Sewers. Pupils were captivated by the informative and fun assembly. There was plenty of interaction throughout the assembly and pupils enjoyed joining.

The assembly was very informative and focused around the 3Ps – the only things that should be flushed down the toilet!  Pee, poo and toilet paper. Pupils were shocked to discover that all sorts of things are found at the sewage treatments plants, things that should not be flushed down the toilet!!  These include nappies, baby/wet wipes and even crazy things like plastic toys, false teeth and pants!  Some people even flush dead goldfish down the toilet but these should be buried or released into a river as they also block the machines at the sewage treatment plant.

Plastic does not rot and pupils were shocked to learn that wipes are made up of 90% plastic (unless they are flushable/biodegradable). It takes 100,000 years for a wipe to rot!

Pupils got an insight into what happens at a sewage treatment plant. They learnt that no chemicals are involved in sewers. Instead oxygen is pumped into tanks to encourage the good bacteria to grow and ‘eat’ the bad bacteria. Treated water is called effluent and is pumped back into rivers.

The assembly finished with a song to teach pupils what to flush down the loo and what not to! A truly super sewer assembly thanks to Severn Trent.
