Spooky Stories event inspires Year Six to think ahead

On Tuesday, Year Six pupils from King’s St Alban’s and King’s Hawford joined together for an exploration of “Spooky Stories from around the World”, an event run by Mr Low, the Head of English at King’s Worcester.

The children were welcomed into the atmospheric Undercroft of Worcester Cathedral by teachers from the King’s English Department in full spooky costume. Surrounded by candles and eerie music, they listened to a range of mysterious stories from different cultures, and were then taken back to the teachers’ classrooms to take part in writing workshops, exploring the language and features of Gothic stories. This was an invaluable opportunity to work with new friends, analyse complex texts such as Frankenstein, and get to know the Senior School English teachers, who were very impressed by the children’s superb participation and knowledge.

Year Six left the sessions with a plethora of ideas for their own Gothic stories, which they discussed and refined in an English lesson back at Hawford and are now ready to be written up as a finished composition over the half-term break. All the stories will be submitted for a competition run by Mr Low. Entries will be read and judged by the Senior School English teachers and Mr Low will return to each of the Prep Schools to announce the winners and award prizes next half term.

Year Six had a great morning, and we thank Mr Low and his team for all their hard work.

After the excitement of the morning pupils from King’s Hawford enjoyed lunch with their friends from King’s St Alban’s in the Senior Dining Room. This was the perfect opportunity to relax and refuel ahead of a busy afternoon.

During the afternoon our Year 6 pupils were given the opportunity to experience what life will be like in Big King’s next year. Our pupils took part in a carousel of lessons ranging from chemistry to art and DT to history. These lessons gave pupils a chance to explore the different academic departments, meet Senior School staff and get hands on with their learning. It was a great opportunity to get to know friends from across the Foundation ahead of the move to Big King’s next year.

Year 6 were also delighted to be reunited with a few familiar faces. Members of last year’s Year 6 cohort were on hand to talk through the big move and answer any questions our pupils might have.

The transition event is one of many that happen throughout the final years of Prep School to help ensure a smooth transition at Year 7.
