Sports Round Up Autumn Term Week 10
U8 Rugby Festival at Winterfold
As always, the Year Three boys were buzzing with excitement, ready for their rugby festival over at Winterfold on Tuesday afternoon. It was great to see the progress that they have made so far this term. In previous weeks, we have worked on hitting space and coming up together as a defensive line. This was definitely the best afternoon of rugby we have seen from the U8s this year, a complete team performance, with everyone in the squad contributing to the impressive attacking rugby that was on display. Well done!
U8 Hockey v Hereford Cathedral School
The girls travelled to Hereford on Tuesday for their fixture, and there was some lovely singing on the way in the ‘bus! When we arrived, the girls were split into two teams and they each played two games. Maddie was excellent in her team, tackling for the ball and bringing it up towards our attacking end. We do need to remember to stop the ball and hit it out of the defending D when we’re defending; all too often we were just stopping the ball. In the other match, Julietta was excellent in her determination to take the ball up and score a goal. Daisy was able to make some superb hits out of the D at the defending end. All girls worked hard at their positions and were determined throughout; they did enjoy their chocolate bar on the way back in the ‘bus too! We didn’t keep score (as often with this age group), but many goals were scored by both teams. Well done all!
U9 Hockey v Hereford Cathedral School
On Tuesday, we took all the Year Four girls over to Leominster to play HCS. It is a long trip for this age group, but the singing on the ‘bus made it a noisy but short journey. Our girls played extremely well and were delighted with the result. Our A team scored five goals, and really played some lovely passing hockey. In the B team, Hannah worked hard up front to try to get the ball forward, and Greta really shone with the effort she put into her tackles.
U10 A and B Hockey v Hereford Cathedral School
The girls had a wonderful afternoon over at Hereford last Friday. The B team played first and there was some good passing up the wing and towards the goal. Hereford scored early, but our defenders were tireless in their efforts to move the ball out of the danger zone and up towards the attacking D. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to convert to a goal, but the girls’ never-ending determination right to the very end will stand them in good stead for the future. Emma was the well-deserved Opposition Player of the Match, and the score was 1-0 to Hereford. Well done all!
The A team were next, and the girls are getting used to their positions and knowing where they should be on the pitch. Hereford took the early lead and then we scored to level the score at 1-1 by half-time. The goal was superb: Georgia set it up, passed it to Skye, who dribbled it down the wing and in to Charlotte in the D, who then converted the shot into a goal. It was one of the best we have seen from that age group. In the second half , Hereford appeared the stronger team, and much of the game was spent with us defending. Sophia, Yifei and Zara all tried their best to get the ball out of their D, but it was Madie as goalkeeper who was on fire and saved many goals. She was superb and was awarded the thoroughly deserved accolade of Opposition Player of the Match. The score remained 1-1. Well done!
U9 & U11 RGS Cross Country
This is always a fantastic event, with hundreds of children from dozens of schools coming together to run quite a challenging course, all the more so on this occasion, with the ground being very wet under foot. At the end of the event, Mr Bousfield brings all the schools together to make the presentations and he spoke to everyone about how amazing it was to see so many children of different abilities participating in the event. He made a point of saying that, even if you were near the end of the field, you should all be proud that you had been selected to represent your school. We had a few competitors that we thought would find the course difficult, but these children were incredible and we could not have been more proud of their efforts.
We also need to celebrate some fantastic individual achievements. Helena C came second in her age group in a field of over 60 girls. Our Year Four girls are a vivacious and determined bunch, as they proved yet again this afternoon. Thea H came fourth, and the other girls were close behind her with Nell 7th, Romi 9th, Edith 10th, Hannah 26th and Martha 38th. Their team scored 30 points and came second overall, pipped at the post by another school by a single point.
