U11 Netball v Winterfold
Thankfully the flurry of snow in the morning was replaced by sunshine for King’s Hawford to host Winterfold for the U11 Netball matches. They played both 5 a-side and 7 a-side formats which was great experience for the year 6 girls before they move up to year 7.
Mrs Butt’s U11 team made a strong start in the attack with Marnie and Pip K putting several goals on the score sheet before Pip K took a heavy fall taking her off for the remainder of the match. Iza, Sophie and Olivia all worked their socks of in defence in the first two quarters limiting Winterfold to just two goals a session. Pippa P made some very impressive interceptions and linked nicely with Lyra and Millie through the centre of the court. The player of the match was Marnie P for her dominant performance in both attack and defence.
Miss Lake’s U11 team put on a fantastic performance in their fixture this week against Winterfold. Dominating play from the first whistle, Thea, Chloe T and Chloe S executed impressive centre-pass plays to move the ball quickly into the D – something that has been rehearsed in Monday lessons. Thea’s superb interceptions and Mary’s excellent positioning and passing were instrumental, while Olivia W’s strong defense kept the opposition at bay. Winterfold grew into the game and it became a tightly-fought contest, with King’s Hawford’s resilience being the deciding factor. Players of the match went to Thea and Mary for their outstanding contributions. A huge well done to the whole team for their skill, determination and teamwork!
U9 RGS The Grange Tournament
The tournament began with two closely contested matches. Quick and accurate passing opened up opportunities for Amelie and Alanna, ultimately leading to a hard-fought 1-0 win against The Downs. A similarly tight 1-0 victory followed in the second game against Winterfold. The third match, played against our sister school, King’s St. Alban’s, showcased Elise’s impressive speed as she drove the ball into the D, setting up Eleanor and Persie for scoring chances. A commanding 3-0 win ensured King’s Hawford remained undefeated. In the subsequent encounter with the hosts, RGS The Grange, several key interceptions and a late goal from Elise sealed another important victory, even as the girls began to feel the strain of playing multiple back-to-back matches. Nevertheless, the momentum continued with a dominating performance against Moor Park, where Ellie H and Amelie combined to score six goals in just seven minutes. Blue Coat provided the biggest challenge in the sixth match, with end-to-end play resulting in a 2-2 draw. Here, Amelie and Ellie H were crucial in defense, while Aurelia and Persie’s teamwork created beautiful attacking opportunities. In the final game against Hereford Cathedral, Eleanor showcased her growing shooting prowess by scoring all four goals.
After an exhilarating afternoon of matches, the King’s Hawford U9 team were crowned winners of the tournament and were presented with gold medals by the RGS staff.
King’s Hawford vs. Winterfold & RGS Springfield – Triangular Tournament
King’s Hawford took to the court with two determined teams coached by Mrs Beech and Miss Holtham, in a thrilling triangular fixture against Winterfold and RGS Springfield. The afternoon was packed with energy, skill, and a real sense of teamwork as players demonstrated fantastic shooting, fast-paced passing, and remarkable resilience.
Throughout the matches, King’s Hawford showcased their attacking strength with clinical finishing in the shooting circle, capitalizing on every opportunity to score. Their movement down the court was fast and direct, with quick transitions and clever passing keeping the opposition on their toes. The defensive team of girls worked tirelessly, with excellent interceptions preventing the ball from entering the shooting D and breaking down attacking plays before they could develop.
Both teams displayed superb teamwork, supporting each other both in attack and defence, adapting to challenges with determination. The resilience shown on court was commendable, with players refusing to give up and battling for every ball, especially when shooting.
A huge thank you to the fantastic parent supporters, whose encouragement from the sidelines always help lift the teams and spur them on throughout matches. It was an afternoon of high-energy, competitive spirit, and sportsmanship, with all teams putting on a great display of netball.
Mrs Beech and Miss Holtham were delighted that the girls showcased the skills learnt in lessons and club and were then rewarded for their efforts.
Players of the tournament were awarded to Ariana, Zara, Bella, and Charlotte P.
Football
U8 and U9 football vs Winterfold & KSA
On Tuesday afternoon the year 3 and 4 boys were hosted by Winterfold school for a triangular fixture alongside the hosts and King’s St Alban’s. The Hawford boys were arranged into three mixed Year 3 and 4 teams for the afternoon. Mr Hodgkins’s team started with a challenging match against a Winterfold team who had several impressive attacking players. Despite this, the Hawford boys were well organised and worked hard to keep their opponents at bay. None more so than Cassian, who continued to get stuck in in the midfield. The boys grew in confidence as the match went on and started to create more chances in attacking positions. After a short break, the boys flew out of the traps at the start of their second match against King’s St Alban’s. We were dominant in possession with Thomas, Joshy and Bruce linking up well to cause a constant threat to the KSA defence. Billy was superb all afternoon, defending well and starting attacks from the back.
U11 Football vs Hereford Cathedral School
On Wednesday the Year 6 footballers played host to Hereford Cathedral School. Mr Hodgkins’s team enjoyed an extremely close and competitive match that was played in the right spirit from both teams. It was a prelude to the sides meeting again in Friday’s ISFA South West Regional Competition at Clifton College. The Hawford team started strongly and dominated much of the first half exchanges. The boys continued to work hard in possession and demonstrated pleasing levels of intensity and speed in their passing and movement enabling them to create several big goal scoring opportunities. Unfortunately some of these chances were spurned due to decision making in front of goal. The Hereford goalkeeper also had a super first half and kept the score down to just one goal at the half time break. The boys struggled a little to keep up this intensity in the second half and Hereford started to create more of their own opportunities, testing the Hawford defence. Despite this, the second half was a very evenly fought contest between two good teams. We are looking forward to re-uniting the rivalry in the group stage of Friday’s ISFA tournament.
Mr Stigant’s Team
The King’s Hawford U11 side took on Hereford Cathedral School at home on a beautiful Spring afternoon on Wednesday. It was, again, great to see the side continue to hit new heights, with some quality interplay and clinical finishing. In competitive game in which the opposition were hard to break down, special praise goes to Freddie B who marshalled the defence and Noah L who showed off some silky skills in midfield.
U10 Footbal Vs Hereford Cathedral
The under 10 footballers travelled to Hereford Cathedral School on Wednesday. Both Hawford sides played some spectacular football drawing plaudits from the opposition staff and parents. Mr Cook’s team finally managed to combine attacking flair and defensive grit, playing some outstanding football. Louis Y was instrumental in the defensive effort, showing incredible energy and determination to shut down multiple Hereford attacks. Harry J led the attack with flair, he stretched the defence with his runs and scored a stunning goal reminiscent of Paul Gascoigne’s memorable goal against Scotland in Euro 96.
Mr Brown’s team played some excellent football in their fixture. Luca M dominated midfield starting continual attacks with his excellent passing ability. Alex B’s energy and positive approach shone through and lifted his team mates.
Swimming
On Thursday afternoon, twenty-five Year 5 and 6 swimmers travelled to King’s St. Alban’s for a Swimming Gala; for some Year 5’s, this was their first experience competing for the school. The competition was intense, the closest event all year, with strong performances from all three competing schools: King’s Hawford, King’s St. Alban’s and RGS The Grange.
The support from the swimmers on the poolside and parents in the spectator created an electric atmosphere. King’s Hawford swimmers delivered impressive performances, with victories for Zara and Arthur G (Y5), Iza, Thea, Pippa P, Charles C and James in their individual events. The relay teams dominated these events, with first place finishes in the U10 girls Medley (Zara, Maysie, Charlotte F and Ruby), U10 boys medley (Harry, Arthur G, Austin and Charles H). The U11 boys relay team and U11 girls relay team also secured victories in both the medley and freestyle relay events (Millie, Thea, Pippa P, Lyra, Charles C, James, Noah and Harry). A special mention goes to Arthur G (Y5), who stepped up to swim in the U11 boys breaststroke, securing victory, and also contributed to second-place finishes for the second King’s Hawford team of boys in both the medley and freestyle relay events.
After an afternoon of thrilling races, it was announced that King’s Hawford had won the gala with a total of 120 points. To round off a successful event, Thea and Charles C led the three cheers. Congratulations to all swimmers for their hard work, determination, and sportsmanship.
