The Weekly Sports Round-Up

Tuesday 23rd September U9B Hockey v Hereford Cathedral School

The U9B hockey team enjoyed an exciting match on Tuesday afternoon against Hereford Cathedral School. The ball moved swiftly between both ends of the pitch, keeping everyone on their toes. Nell played brilliantly, showing great skill and focus throughout. She managed to score two excellent goals, one of which was beautifully set up by Molly. Hereford proved to be the stronger team overall and won the match, but our players showed fantastic determination and teamwork. A huge well done to Nell, who was deservedly awarded Player of the Match for her outstanding performance. Great effort from all, well done!

 U9 Rugby Festival at RGS

The U9s travelled to RGS The Grange for their first ever contact competitive rugby festival. Having worked hard on tackle technique during games lessons this term, the boys were excited to put their new skills into action. Across the afternoon, the team faced Monmouth, RGS, The Croft and King’s Hawford. Each game provided a fresh challenge, but the boys rose to the occasion superbly. It was fantastic to see them not only putting in determined tackles but also running with real intent and supporting each other throughout. The standard of rugby on display was excellent, particularly given this was their first taste of competitive contact rugby.

Perhaps most pleasing was the enjoyment the boys took from the festival. They showed real enthusiasm to get back on the pitch after each match, eager to play more rugby and continue developing their skills.

Player of the Day was awarded to Hugo F, who delivered an outstanding all-round performance. His tackling was particularly impressive, with a number of try-saving efforts that made a huge difference to the team. Hugo set a brilliant example with his determination and skill.

Overall, the boys should be very proud of their efforts, it was a memorable afternoon of rugby and a fantastic step forward in their development.

Wednesday 24th September U11A Rugby v RGS and Bluecoat

On Wednesday 17th, five Year 6 boys represented the Under 11A rugby team in two matches at RGS The Grange, taking on Bluecoat School and RGS The Grange.

The first match, against Bluecoat School, proved a tough opening fixture. Although the King’s boys produced some excellent passages of rugby, a couple of quick Bluecoat runners were given too much time and space on the ball, making them difficult to stop. Bluecoat struck early with two tries, but King’s responded with real character. Adam, Ben, and Max made strong runs down the wing, and Hugo showed great strength and determination to power over for a well-deserved try. Despite their efforts, the steep, wide pitch played into Bluecoat’s hands, and they added a further score to take the win. However, the final score didn’t reflect how close the match really was, and the boys left the field with many positives, as well as knowing they needed to be more clinical in their next match.

After an encouraging team talk from Mr Cook and Mr Jenkinson, the players regrouped for their second match, against local rivals RGS Worcester. Fired up and full of determination, King’s started brilliantly with early tries from Ben and Sam. Dominating both territory and possession, the team set up camp in RGS The Grange’s half and never looked back. Zack made an excellent impact with his powerful play, while further tries from Hugo and Max sealed an impressive 4–0 victory.

This was an outstanding team performance, showcasing both individual skill and collective teamwork, and more than made up for the earlier disappointment. Coaches, parents, and players alike were rightly proud of the display.

Both fixtures also highlighted valuable areas for development, such as pressing up as a defensive line more quickly and attacking with greater pace and intensity. The boys will continue to focus on these aspects in training ahead of their eagerly anticipated trip to Millfield next Wednesday, where they will take part in the annual Prep Schools Rugby Festival.

A huge thank you goes to all parents and relatives who came along to support – your encouragement is always very much appreciated.

U10 Rugby v RGS, Hawford and Winterfold

The U10A team travelled to The Grange on Wednesday where they played three competitive fixtures against RGS, Hawford and Winterfold. The lads won their first game of the season against RGS, showing great determination and teamwork. Each fixture provided its own challenges, but the squad worked hard in both attack and defence, and it was clear that their ruck practice in training was translated onto the pitch. The team had improved across the afternoon, and it was a valuable experience with the players representing the school really well.

Eli G was the player of the day with this being his first game for this team. He worked tirelessly in both attack and defence, driving the team forward and making sure he was involved in every tackle and ruck. There were also standout moments from Dylan and Bertie, who both scored excellent tries after running the length of the pitch, while Haadi made a number of crucial tackles and got himself on the scoresheet with a try as well.

U10 Rugby v RGS

Following last week’s game, the U10s were eager to get back in the swing of contact rugby this week in a fixture against RGS. Both teams showed real determination with ball in hand, looking to attack space and exploit gaps in the opposition’s defence.

There were some excellent individual contributions throughout the match. George, Jack and Daniel ran strongly, weaving through defenders and making valuable yards for the team. Rudy stood out with some accurate and well-timed passing, helping to keep the attack flowing. Max’s rucking was another highlight – he consistently got into strong positions, demonstrating how well he has transferred the skills we’ve been practising in games lessons and at club into a competitive situation.

Player of the Day was awarded to Jeremiah, whose powerful running and try-scoring ability made a big impact. Just as importantly, he showed superb team spirit, moving the ball down the line to involve others, and unselfishly offloading when he sensed a teammate was in a better position. His all-round performance summed up the values we want to see in the team.
