Y5’s poetry masterclass with Mr Low
This week pupils in Year 5 were delighted to welcome staff from the King’s Worcester English Department to King’s Hawford. Head of English, Mr Low and his team taught a poetry masterclass on the theme of Valentine’s Day.
Children from Mr Hodgkins’ and Miss Kingston’s class spent time analysing the poem Valentine by former Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy. They explored the poetic techniques she used, such as similes, metaphors, repetition and personification. Pupils really enjoyed being able to work with staff from the Senior School and definitely rose to the occasion, demonstrating not only their excellent writing skills but also their maturity.
Before he left, Mr Low set the pupils a challenge. In follow-up lessons, the children will write a poem inspired by Valentine’s Day about something they love. Each poem will then be entered into a poetry competition, which will be adjudicated by Mr Low and his team at Big King’s.
This session is part of a series of transition events in which our pupils take part as they prepare for their move to the Senior School in September 2024. By spending time with staff members from King’s Worcester, pupils not only develop relationships with their teachers of the future but also gain an insight into the exciting journey which lies ahead of them.
