King's Hawford
12 January
Year 1 are not afraid of the big bad wolf.
On Tuesday, our Year 1 pupils headed out on their very first school trip of the year. Armed with wellies, waterproofs and plenty of layers, they departed from King’s Hawford for Bishops Wood. The pupils were in high spirits as they made the short trip down the dual carriageway.
The trip was designed to reinforce the topics that Year 1 are currently covering, with particular focus on materials (science) and traditional tales (English). During the day, children spent time finding out about materials and their different properties.
On arrival at Bishops Wood, the children headed to the on-site classroom and completed a sorting activity, identifying characters, settings and objects. They then worked in small groups to come up with a brand-new fairy-tale using one item from each group.
After this, the children headed outside where they focussed on the story of the Three Little Pigs. The children were tasked with working in teams to build each of the houses, made of straws, sticks and bricks, before the Big Bad Wolf came and tried to blow them down! They discussed the materials used and some of the properties.
After lunch, the children went to the Story Wood, where they enjoyed some free time, exploring different fairy-tale stories, as well as making their own clay gingerbread people (some of which were decorated with natural objects found within the wood).
Miss Lake was full of praise for the Year 1 children, who behaved impeccably and were great ambassadors for the school. The children, many of whom were very reluctant to leave, had a great day!
