Year 1 Become Coin Detectives!

This week, Year 1 learners became curious explorers of the coins we use every day in the United Kingdom. With a hands-on and investigative approach, the children were introduced to the different coins in our currency, examining their size, shape, colour and material.

They quickly discovered that there’s more to coins than meets the eye! Working in small groups, the children practised recognising each coin and spotting key details such as numbers, words, and images that helped them identify its value. There was plenty of excitement as they sorted real coins and used their detective skills to uncover clues “Is it silver or bronze? Smooth or ridged? What number can we see?”

The activity sparked lots of thoughtful discussion about money in everyday life and helped reinforce key numeracy skills in a fun and meaningful way. It was wonderful to see the children so engaged, asking questions and making connections as they sorted and grouped the coins.

Well done Year 1 you’re on your way to becoming super savers and smart spenders!
