Year 1 Become Map Explorers
With maps in hand, Year 1 set out on an exciting adventure around the school this week! Their humanities lessons focused on maps, and the children began by exploring all the different types they already knew about, from world maps and atlases to globes and even sat navs. The moment they were introduced to a detailed map of our school, their eyes lit up with curiosity.
Eager to put their new skills into practice, the children took a walk around the school grounds, spotting familiar landmarks like the swimming pool, the Boathouse, and the Cathedral. It was wonderful to hear them using terms like navigate and bird’s-eye view as they traced their route across the map.
The adventure took a scientific turn too! As part of their materials topic, the children observed the Keyes Building and identified all the different materials used in its construction, applying their knowledge in a real-world context.
It was a morning full of exploration, discovery, and learning in action. Year 1 showed curiosity, confidence and teamwork throughout the journey, and we can’t wait for their next map adventure!
