Year 1 Builds Their Way Through ‘Homes Around Us’
This week, Year 1 have been busy bringing their ‘Homes Around Us’ topic to life through a series of hands-on, creative and thought-provoking activities. The classroom has been buzzing with excitement as the children demonstrated their understanding of different types of homes, from cosy bungalows and tall flats to detached, semi-detached, and terraced houses.
Using a range of construction toys and building materials, the pupils set to work designing and building their very own model homes. Working together, they showed impressive teamwork and problem-solving skills as they decided on the best ways to represent key features such as doors, windows, and roofs. Their imaginative creations reflected both their growing understanding and their natural flair for design!
As well as building, the children practised identifying and labelling different types of homes and had a wonderful time playing a lively “Show Me the House” game a fun way to test their knowledge while keeping everyone engaged and smiling.
The learning didn’t stop there! Year 1 also focused on something very personal learning their own home address and creating detailed drawings of their houses. They took great pride in describing where they live, talking about the special things that make their homes unique to them.
It has been a week full of creativity, discovery and practical learning, helping our young geographers to understand more about the world immediately around them. Well done Year 1.
