Year 1 Explore the Wonderful World of Minibeasts at Smite Farm

Year 1 enjoyed a fantastic day at Smite Farm, bringing their science learning to life as they explored the world of minibeasts, habitats, microhabitats, and what living things need to survive.

Armed with magnifying pots, bug nets, and boundless enthusiasm, the children became intrepid bug hunters, venturing into the woodland, orchard meadow, and pond to search for fascinating creatures in their natural environments. They carefully lifted logs and peered into tree stumps, swept the tall grass with nets, and dipped into the water to discover a wide variety of underwater life.

Using magnifying glasses and identification charts, the children observed and classified their findings. There was great excitement as they identified creatures such as dragonfly nymphs, blood worms, newts, slugs, spiders, woodlice and water boatmen, to name just a few!

One of the highlights of the day was the Minibeast Survival Game. After choosing a minibeast they had encountered, pupils moved in the style of their chosen creature and journeyed through four stations collecting the essential elements of survival: air, water, food, and shelter. The challenge intensified as they had to dodge the hungry blue tit (brilliantly played by Mrs Cinao!) in order to survive.

To end the day, the class gathered to examine their discoveries more closely under a digital microscope, sparking even more curiosity and wonder. The children impressed us all with their thoughtful questions, careful observations, and confident use of scientific vocabulary they’ve developed throughout the year.

Well done, Year 1, for being such enthusiastic young scientists!
