Year One’s Animal Mania

Year One had a fantastic time at their Rainforest Animal Workshop this week. They were excited to see, and even hold, a variety of creatures including bearded dragons, giant bullfrogs, corn snakes, giant millipedes, and a tortoise. The children listened very carefully to Carla the animal handler, and learned about where these animals live in the rainforest and what they like to eat. It was impressive to see the class apply their knowledge from their Rumble in the Jungle topic this term, as they described different animal groups and confidently explained the differences between herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores.

The highlight of the day was meeting the eight-week-old sugar glider, who amazed us with his cute and fluffy appearance and tiny squeaks. He had not learned how to jump and glide yet, but the children loved being able to stroke his head. Morris the bearded dragon was also a firm favourite among the children, who requested to see him again. As a special treat, even though this animal was not native to rainforests, Carla brought in Patricia the African pygmy hedgehog, who the children certainly enjoyed meeting!

The children asked lots of insightful questions about the animals they had encountered, and some definitely ventured out of their comfort zones. Well done Year One; it was brilliant to see you all engaging so beautifully!

Thank you to Carla from Animal Mania for visiting Year One.
