Year 2 Begin Their Guided Reading Adventure

Year 2 have been buzzing with excitement as they began their new Guided Reading book, The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. The children have been captivated by the story and have been keen to explore the characters in depth, especially Plop, the baby barn owl.

This week, the focus has been on adjectives and how they can bring a character to life. The pupils have been thinking carefully about descriptive words to capture Plop’s personality, appearance, and emotions. In addition, they have been practising an important writing skill: placing commas correctly between adjectives to make their sentences clear and engaging.

It has been fantastic to see the children so enthusiastic about sharing their ideas and using rich vocabulary. Many have been reading their descriptions aloud with confidence, explaining why they chose certain adjectives and how they help paint a picture of Plop in the reader’s mind.

This exciting start to the Guided Reading sessions is not only helping Year 2 to develop their reading and writing skills but is also sparking their imagination and love of storytelling.
