Year 2 Explore How Cacti Survive in the Desert
Year 2 have been full of curiosity and excitement this week as they delved into their Deserts topic, asking the fascinating question: How do cacti survive in the Sahara Desert?
To bring their learning to life, the children worked together to create their very own hot desert habitat. With great enthusiasm, they researched the features of a desert, carefully deciding what to include in their desert habitat tray. From golden sand dunes to rocky landscapes and even a few desert creatures, their mini desert took shape before their eyes!
As the children explored the unique environment of the Sahara, one question sparked even more intrigue: How do cacti manage to survive with so little rain? To investigate, they examined a real cactus they had planted, taking a closer look at its spines, thick skin, and roots. They made predictions, asked thoughtful questions, and shared ideas about how this fascinating plant stores water and protects itself from the scorching sun.
This hands-on exploration sparked wonder and excitement, with pupils eagerly discussing their discoveries and looking forward to learning more about how other desert animals and plants adapt to extreme conditions. A fantastic lesson filled with curiosity, creativity, and scientific thinking, well done Year 2!
