Year 2’s Magical Adventures with Castles and Dragons
It has been a truly magical time in Year 2, with our pupils diving headfirst into the fascinating world of castles, knights, and dragons! As part of their history topic, the children have been learning about castles and medieval life. Inspired by the chivalry and courage of knights, they designed and decorated their very own shields, taking inspiration from the colourful emblems and patterns used in jousting tournaments. Each shield was unique, reflecting both creativity and careful thought, and the children loved imagining themselves riding into battle or protecting a castle with their designs proudly on display.
But the excitement didn’t stop there… This week, Year 2 made a most unexpected discovery, dragon eggs! In 2F, a shimmering rainbow egg was found hiding in the classroom, while 2W stumbled across a fiery red and golden egg in the Forest School area. The children were thrilled to discover that inside each egg was a baby dragon!
The discovery sparked a flurry of imagination. In 2F, pupils created their own dragon egg artwork, which is now proudly displayed in the classroom. To fuel their creativity even further, the children listened to Tell Me a Dragon by Jackie Morris, a beautifully illustrated story filled with stunning imagery and magical descriptions. Inspired by the book, our budding writers crafted their very own dragon similes. Their ideas were truly fantastic, from “eyes as green as sparkling emeralds” to “teeth as sharp as broken, shattered glass,” the children brought their dragons to life with words as vividly as with pictures.
It has been wonderful to see Year 2’s imaginations take flight, combining history, art, storytelling and creative writing. From brave knights to mysterious dragons, this topic has captured their curiosity and sparked both learning and laughter in equal measure. We can’t wait to see where their adventure takes them next!
