Year 4 are cycling safely

On a gloriously sunny Wednesday, Bikeability returned to King’s St Alban’s. Pupils from each of our two Year 4 cohorts completed a Bikeability course with Mr Martin Addis and Mr Joe Rowe. The main aims of the sessions were to improve the children’s basic cycling skills and help them learn to ride their bikes safely.

At the start of each session, pupils were firstly taught how to wear their helmets properly: a simple yet very important lesson. The instructors then took them through which items of clothing they should wear to stay safe. They were advised to avoid dark colours in order to ensure that they could be easily spotted by motorists.

Once they had covered the basics of helmets and clothing, the pupils moved on to some practical cycling skills. These covered how to signal and manoeuvre, how to stop safely, how to change gear (and when to do so) and how to mount and dismount safely. During the course the instructors also spoke about the importance of bike maintenance, urging us to check our bikes before every ride.

Each session finished with games, which everyone really enjoyed. The staff who joined each session were very impressed with the pupils’ attitude and willingness to learn. The pupil’s confidence on their bikes increased throughout the course of the session and this in itself was wonderful to witness.

Congratulations to everyone who took part, all of whom passed the course with flying colours.
