Year 4 Create, Classify and Capture Insects in Science Study
As part of their science studies this term, Year 4 have been exploring the fascinating world of insects. After learning about the key features that define insects, the children put their knowledge into practice by designing their very own species. Using modelling clay, they brought their imaginative creations to life, complete with names and unique characteristics.
Taking it one step further, the children used stop-motion animation to make their clay insects ‘move’, showcasing their creativity and digital skills in an exciting and interactive way.
The next stage of their learning introduced them to branching keys, a scientific tool used to identify and classify living things. Using their own insect models, the class collaborated to produce branching keys that could successfully distinguish between each of their weird and wonderful insect inventions.
To round off the topic, Year 4 took their learning outdoors. Armed with sweep nets, pooters, and even trying a bit of tree beating (rest assured, no trees were harmed!), they carefully collected real-life insects. Back in the classroom, they used their branching key skills to identify the creatures they had found, applying their learning to the natural world around them.
It’s been a hands-on, creative and inspiring topic well done Year 4!
