Year 4 Investigate: Fact or Fiction?
Year 4 embarked on a fascinating fact-finding mission this week, diving into the statement: “I’ve heard a rumour that polar bears have two layers of fur.”
Armed with curiosity and research tools, the children set out to uncover the truth. They confirmed that polar bears indeed have two layers of fur — an undercoat for insulation and an outer layer of waterproof guard hairs. Intriguingly, they discovered that these outer hairs are hollow and transparent, trapping a layer of insulating air between the two layers of fur.
Through their research, the class also learned that polar bears are so effectively insulated that they sometimes face the risk of overheating, a surprising challenge for an Arctic animal!
Afterwards, each group shared their findings with the rest of the class, practising their presentation skills while expanding their understanding of these remarkable creatures. A big well done to Year 4 for their scientific curiosity and teamwork!
