Year 6 History: Exploring the Industrial Revolution Through Curious Questions

Year 6 have made an exciting start to their new History topic on the Industrial Revolution, beginning their learning through a fascinating collection of historical images. Using these visual sources, the children became history detectives, carefully examining what they could see, sharing their ideas and developing thoughtful questions about life during this period of dramatic change.

The images sparked lively discussion as the children explored crowded city streets, towering factory chimneys, busy workshops and scenes of Victorian life. They considered what these images might reveal about living and working conditions and began to question why towns and cities grew so rapidly, what life was like for children and how new inventions transformed society.

Using the prompts ‘What can I see?’, ‘What do I think?’ and ‘What do I wonder?’, the children demonstrated some fantastic historical thinking. They made careful observations, drew thoughtful inferences and asked insightful questions, showing a real curiosity about the past.

It has been wonderful to see Year 6 so engaged from the very beginning of this topic. Their questions and curiosity have created a fantastic foundation for exploring one of the most significant periods of change in British history.
