Year 6 Investigate the Science of Burning

In science this term, Year 6 have been exploring the topic of ‘Burning’, gaining hands-on experience with some fascinating experiments. As part of their lessons, the pupils investigated what happens when materials are burned and discovered the new products that are formed during combustion.

During one particularly exciting experiment, the children used a microscope slide and a cold jam jar to collect and examine the results of burning. Through careful observation, they were able to collect carbon and water, the products of the flame, and see firsthand how burning transforms substances. The pupils were captivated to learn that a seemingly simple flame is actually a complex chemical process, producing entirely new substances as it consumes fuel. They worked methodically, made predictions, and recorded their findings, developing important scientific skills such as observation, analysis and critical thinking.

The lesson not only deepened the children’s understanding of combustion but also highlighted the wonder of science, turning curiosity into discovery through hands-on investigation. It was inspiring to see how engaged and excited the pupils were, asking thoughtful questions and sharing their discoveries with their classmates.

Year 6 pupils’ exploration of burning was a perfect example of science in action, showing that even everyday phenomena, like a flame, can reveal incredible scientific insights.
