Year 6 Step Back in Time at the Black Country Museum
Last Friday, our Year 6 pupils braved the chilly weather for an exciting and immersive visit to the Black Country Museum, a day that truly brought their history learning to life. From the moment they arrived, the children were transported back to the industrial era. They watched traditional metalwork and chain-making demonstrations, gaining a fascinating insight into the skills and hard work that defined the Black Country’s past.
A real highlight was experiencing a Victorian classroom firsthand. Under the watchful eye of a very strict schoolmistress, the children discovered just how different school life was over a century ago, from the rules and routines to the discipline and teaching methods of the time.
As they explored the historic houses, pupils learned about everyday life for Victorian families. They examined household objects, compared past and present home life, and developed a deeper understanding of what childhood looked like in that era.
Of course, no trip to the Black Country Museum would be complete without sampling some traditional treats. Visiting the old-fashioned sweet shop, bakery, and famous fish and chip shop was a firm favourite, adding a delicious and memorable ending to a fantastic day.
It was a wonderful experience that enriched the children’s history studies, sparked great curiosity, and left Year 6 with plenty to talk about back in the classroom.
