Year 6 Step Into History
Stepping into History: Year Group Explores the Battle of Worcester at Worcester Cathedral
Yesterday, our pupils were transported back in time as they took part in an immersive day of learning at Worcester Cathedral, centred around the Battle of Worcester and the wider context of the English Civil War.
The visit began with an energetic and hands-on pike drill on College Green, where pupils handled replica pikes and learned how soldiers would have trained and fought in 1651. This practical activity gave the children a real sense of the discipline and coordination required of the pike men during the battle.
One of the highlights of the day was the climb to the top of the Cathedral Tower. From this historic vantage point, pupils stood where Charles II once stood, watching as his Royalist army faced overwhelming opposition from the Parliamentarian forces. The breathtaking view helped to bring the dramatic events of the battle to life.
Inside the Cathedral’s peaceful Lady Chapel, students brought history to life through a dynamic drama workshop. They stepped into the roles of key figures such as Oliver Cromwell, the Duke of Hamilton, and Charles II. By sequencing events and creating freeze frames of pivotal moments, the children developed a deeper understanding of the people and decisions that shaped the course of the battle.
During a guided tour of the Cathedral, pupils explored significant historical sites, including the tombs of the Duke of Hamilton—who died from wounds sustained in the battle—King John, and Prince Arthur. The children also learned how the Cathedral itself was repurposed during the conflict, including being used as stabling for horses.
We were incredibly fortunate to be supported by expert guides who shared fascinating insights throughout the day, and to make use of the Cathedral’s exceptional education centre, the Undercroft, which served as our base for the visit.
This trip offered a rich and memorable way to engage with one of the most significant chapters in Worcester’s history. Our pupils returned full of enthusiasm, curiosity, and a much deeper appreciation of the historical events that unfolded on their very doorstep.
