Year 5 Reach for the Moon with Oreo Science

As part of their exciting Earth and Beyond science topic, Year 5 enjoyed a fun and delicious hands-on activity to explore the phases of the Moon — using Oreo biscuits!

The children showed fantastic creativity and scientific understanding as they carefully manipulated the cream filling to represent the eight phases of the lunar cycle: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter and waning crescent.

This tasty investigation helped the children visualise how the Moon appears to change shape as it orbits the Earth, deepening their understanding of this fascinating aspect of our Solar System.

Of course, no Oreo science lesson would be complete without a little tasting! After all their hard work, the children were delighted to discover a few biscuits left over to enjoy.

Who knew learning about space could be so delicious? Well done Year 5 for a fantastic session of scientific exploration!
