Cricket: Energy and determination from the first ball
U10 Cricket vs RGS The Grange
The Year Five children completed their term of cricket fixtures with an afternoon of enjoyable matches in glorious sunshine. The teams matched up against sides from RGS The Grange for two hard-ball games and two Incrediball games on Wednesday afternoon. In Mr Hodgkins’s hardball match, Hawford won the toss and elected to field first. Charles C got the innings off to the perfect start by taking two wickets in the opening over, before Thea followed this up in similar style with a third wicket from the very next over. Noah and Jude worked hard to keep it tight in their spells before Pip K produced one of the moments of the match: her consistently threatening deliveries led to her bowling a highly impressive wicket maiden. Charles N, Sophie, Ben, Lyra and Thomas also contributed well with the ball and demonstrated excellent progress with their line and length.
The Hawford batters toiled hard against a strong and accurate bowling line-up. Thomas managed to work the ball into gaps in the field for a couple of early boundaries which put the Hawford team ahead of the required run rate. Thea and Pip were extremely eager to add to this great start, and managed to sneak some valuable singles before their enthusiasm got the better of them and they fell victim to a two run-outs in as many overs. Noah, Ben, Sophie and Lyra also worked hard at the crease but for little reward on the scorecard. This left Charles and Jude requiring forty runs off just eight balls. Despite their best efforts, that included outstanding running, backing up from the non-striker’s end and multiple boundaries, the final pair were only able to put on twenty-five of the runs needed. Despite the result, the children enjoyed a fantastic game of cricket which included many outstanding and memorable moments.
U8 Cricket vs RGS The Grange
On Tuesday afternoon the Year Three children travelled to RGS The Grange for their final cricket matches of the term. All three games were incredibly tight, with only a handful of runs separating the teams. Mr Hodgkins’s team fielded first in their match and were energetic and determined from the very first ball. The children bowled extremely well and demonstrated the clear progress that they have made with the accuracy and consistency of their bowling. Highlights included wickets from Tilly and Orri, but the most memorable moment of the innings came off Eleanor’s bowling: the batter attempted to make a quick single but Tilly sprang into action in the field with a swift pick-up followed by a fast and accurate throw which led to a direct hit of the stumps and a run-out…cue the celebrations!
The Hawford team began the run chase in high spirits with Cassian, Thomas, Ellie and Orri scoring valuable runs in the opening four overs before Isaac and Joshy added to this with some superb running between the wickets and some powerful batting from Joshy in particular. Tilly and Eleanor worked hard for their runs but were unfortunate to lose a couple of wickets to two fantastic catches from the RGS fielders. Persie and Amelie finished off the innings with an impressive display of strength and timing. They scored nineteen runs off the last two overs, including two consecutive Fours into the leg side from Persie that had the spectators cheering. It was a wonderful way to end what has been a superb term of cricket for the Year Three children.
