Cricket Round-Up: Rain, Resilience and Remarkable Play

Despite a week of unpredictable weather, including drizzle, downpours, and the occasional burst of sunshine—our cricket teams have shown true determination and adaptability on the field. Pupils from across Year 3 to Year 5 took part in a series of exciting fixtures and festivals, demonstrating impressive batting, accurate bowling, and outstanding teamwork. Whether diving on damp pitches to save runs, staying focused through rain delays, or celebrating boundaries in the sunshine, every child brought energy, effort, and enthusiasm to the game. A fantastic week of learning, competing, and growing as cricketers!

U8/9 v The Elms – Mr Rowley

The U8/9 cricket team put in a spirited performance during their fixture at The Elms on Tuesday, demonstrating teamwork, determination, and skill across all areas of the game. In the field, Haadi and Matthew were relentless in their efforts, diving to stop runs and showing excellent commitment, by the end of the match, their whites were more green than white! Their energy set the tone for a strong fielding display from the whole team.

The bowling attack was led superbly by Elodie, Maddie, Savannah and Jack, all of whom bowled with consistency and accuracy, taking important wickets at crucial moments. Their discipline kept the opposition under pressure throughout.

With the bat, Monty and Dylan were outstanding, combining powerful ball striking with smart, aggressive running between the wickets to build a strong total. Their communication and awareness were excellent.

Perhaps most impressively, the team supported one another throughout, celebrating each other’s successes and working together with enthusiasm. A fantastic display of teamwork and sportsmanship from all involved.

U8/9 v The Elms – Mrs Clark

On Tuesday, we took three teams to The Elms to play pairs cricket, and I had the pleasure of coaching the B Team, who were outstanding throughout the day. We played an adapted format where a wide or no-ball resulted in a free hit from a cone a rule the players seemed to enjoy. That said, our bowlers impressed me with their accuracy, delivering very few wides or no-balls across the match.

Charlie finished our innings with an impressive maiden over, a rare and commendable feat at this level. Congratulations also go to Harvey, Magson, and Gabriel for taking wickets.

When it was our turn to bat, the team performed superbly. We struck an impressive 22 boundaries in just 10 overs. Magson and Gabriel formed a dynamic partnership, putting on 25 runs in just two overs. Overall, it was a dominant performance with the bat, and we ended with a commanding total of 293 runs.

Well done to everyone involved, a strong team effort and a great result!

U8/9 v The Elms – Mr Atkinson

Tuesday, saw another great afternoon for learning cricket this week. Glorious sunshine greeted us as we reached the Elms, with the hosts winning the toss and choosing to field. Opening the batting, George got us off to a good start. Sophie and Amber showed some good calling and Tiegan, Jeremiah and Daniel hit some impressive shots, allowing us to set a good total.

With the ball, we continued to work on keeping our arms straight, and following through to the stumps, with Max and Rudy showing improvement in their consistency. Overall, we showed good energy, with Rudy making some good stops, eventually managing to defend the total that we had set. Well done to everyone.

RGS The Grange U10, 8-a-side Cricket Festival Mrs Clark

On Wednesday, we took eight of our Year 5 pupils to RGS The Grange to take part in their U10 hard ball pairs cricket festival. The sun was shining as we arrived, and we were looking for some shade to set up our base for the day.

Our first match was against a strong Warwick team. We started well with the ball, Nell and Joshua bowled with excellent discipline, giving away no extras in their first overs. However, Warwick made the most of any loose deliveries and ran very effectively between the wickets. When it was our turn to bat, Warwick bowled with accuracy and consistency, making it difficult for us to score freely.

Partway through the day, play was interrupted by a heavy downpour. There was some uncertainty about whether the tournament would continue, but after a 20-minute delay, we returned to the field in light drizzle to face Winterfold.

This was a much closer contest. Nell, Romi, and Zack all bowled very well, keeping the pressure on the opposition. When batting, Nell got us off to a positive start with a boundary in the first over, but Winterfold’s sharp fielding limited us mostly to singles. Despite the challenging conditions, it was a tightly contested match, and I was particularly proud of how the team stayed focused and motivated in the rain.

Well done to all the players for their effort, resilience, and team spirit throughout the day!
