Hawford Musicians Take Centre Stage in Informal Concert
The Informal Concert held on Tuesday afternoon was a delightful display of musical variety and developing confidence from children across the school. The relaxed atmosphere encouraged the young performers to play with assurance and enjoyment, and the audience was treated to a wide range of instruments, styles and personalities.
The concert opened with James F in Year 1 performing Donkey on a Scooter on the piano, setting an upbeat tone. Confident performances from the Pre-Prep musicians followed with pianist Cora DH’s gentle rendition of Au Clair de la Lune, while Rose T followed later with Ode to Joy and Waltzing Elephants, showing both control and character. Harriet P also impressed with her debut performance of Missus White Got a Fright.
The string players demonstrated beautiful tone and attention to phrasing. Claudia P’s first concert performance shone and Maggie G’s Waltz danced along on confidently on violin, while Mathilda H debuted Morning Sunshine on the cello with a warm sound. In Prep, Elizabeth D and Alice H each gave poised violin solos, and Alexander SC performed Beethoven’s Ecossaise with flair. The violin duet by Fearne B and Georgia P of English Country Garden was full of charm and well-balanced playing.
Woodwind and brass performances added wonderful colour to the programme. Year 2 Georgina P’s first concert saw her play Falling Leaves on the ‘Toot’ flute, while Year 6’s Nicholas HT and Austin R gave confident and polished bassoon solos full of character. Tanith H proudly gave her first French horn solo and Louis Y’s animated Bare Necessities on trumpet brought richness and energy. The Year 5 trumpet duet by Isaac H and Rupert T of Beethoven’s Theme from the 9th Symphony was well coordinated and uplifting.
Other instrumental highlights included Maha N’s serene harp performance of Rain Song, Joshua H’s cool rhythmic drum solo, and Lily G’s confident guitar rendition of London’s Burning. Pianists Monty H and Minnow M-P delighted the audience with The Crocodile and The Wibbly Waltz respectively. Rosie L-C’s fluent performance of Elephant Herd on the piano was full of character.
The vocal performances brought warmth and expression to the concert. Olivia P tunefully sang My Grandfather’s Clock, while Alanna A’s Truly Scrumptious was suitably sweet in character. Minnow MP returned to sing Together with confidence. Older singers Charles H, Izzy, Georgia P and Ariana P each showed growing maturity and stage presence, particularly in well-known musical theatre songs such as If Only You Would Listen, Wouldn’t It Be Loverly, A Whole New World, and Electricity.
Throughout the concert, every pupil demonstrated commitment, preparation, and courage. The concert provided a welcoming informal platform for all to share their musical progress, and the huge supportive audience ensured a joyful and memorable occasion.
We look forward to welcoming you to the next informal concert on 2nd December – get practising!
