KG1 inspired by World Nursery Rhyme Week
This week our youngest pupils in Kindergarten 1 have been enjoying plenty of nursery rhymes as part of World Nursery Rhyme Week. Founded by Music Bugs and launched in 2013, World Nursery Rhyme Week promotes the importance of nursery rhymes in early childhood development and education. It is said that: “if a child knows eight nursery rhymes by the time they are four years old, they are usually among the best readers and spellers in their class by the time they are eight!”
Nursery rhymes and songs are a staple element of learning in Kindergarten, but this week staff have focused on a set nursery rhyme each today. This has allowed the staff and children to immerse themselves fully into the nursery rhyme.
On Monday Humpty Dumpty visited Kindergarten 1! Children made their own Humpty Dumpties out of eggs. They then had plenty of fun watching their eggs “fall” off the wall they had constructed. Always keen to problem solve, the children then attempted to build Humpty a safer wall to sit on, using Duplo bricks. Taking advantage of Kindergarten’s location, the children headed down to the bottom field to have a go at climbing the traversing wall. All of the Kindergarten staff were relieved to report that no major falls occurred! In circle time, staff and children talked about how Humpty Dumpty was feeling before and after his big fall.
Little Miss Muffet arrived in Kindergarten on Tuesday, along with several spiders! The children worked hard to craft tuffets for Little Miss Muffet to sit on and even had a go at making their own curds and whey! Wednesday saw Kindergarten 1 shining brightly with the arrival of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. The children had lots of fun making stars using the Playdoh and even had a trip on a rocket ship to space!
On Thursday, the children were keen to put the kettle on when they welcomed Polly to Kindergarten. The children loved experimenting making drinks using the kettle, cups, saucers and teaspoons! Their creations looked almost good enough to drink….
The week came to close chasing teddy bears round and round the garden on Friday.
It is safe to say that the children have had a fantastic week exploring traditional nursery rhymes in more depth. Over the next few weeks staff will continue to revisit these nursery rhymes alongside others.
