King’s Hawford Weekly Sports Highlights: Top Moments This Week
U8 Hockey Festival at RGS The Grange
Ten Year 3 girls had a fantastic time representing King’s Hawford at a festival hosted by RGS The Grange, competing against local schools like Hereford Cathedral, Winterfold, and more.
Miss Holtham’s team played well, with Maddie making great interceptions and Isla showing strong defense. Miss Lake’s team had a standout moment when Indie drove the ball down the wing to Emily, who scored confidently. Tanith was exceptional in defence, making strong interceptions, sending the ball rolling swiftly down the pitch away from the King’s Hawford D. Jessica and Syrenna also got stuck in making some great interceptions; Jessica’s dribbling of the ball has developed nicely over the last few weeks and this was evident today. The girls enjoyed their afternoon, tucking into some treats at the end of the festival.
U8 Tag Rugby Festival at RGS The Grange
On Tuesday the year 3 boys enjoyed a very impressive afternoon of tag rugby at RGS The Grange.
The Hawford team played in matches against King’s St Albans, Winterfold and RGS The Grange and demonstrated excellent rugby throughout. It was pleasing to see the improved structure in both attack and defence and outstanding support play and decision making skills in possession that enabled several impressive tries to be scored. Mr Hodgkins was delighted with the performances of all boys involved but was especially impressed with Casper’s tackling and defensive display and Noah’s determination when carrying the ball towards the opponent’s try line.
U10 Hockey King’s Hawford Vs Dean Close
On Wednesday The U11 Girls travelled to Cheltenham to play against Dean Close.
Miss Lake’s team
The girls took the pitch first looking to build on their previous success before Half Term. Dean Close were particularly strong and started on the front foot with an immediate attack but Lyra H and Chloe T put up a tremendous defence backed up by Mary in Goal. Both Girls made numerous tackled through the game and cleared the ball out hard and out of danger.
Iza MP, Lily SH and Olivia W worked hard in the midfield and created several chances for Sophie W in attack. Chloe S and Jess K contributed significantly to the team performance and despite the final score not going our way Miss Lake was particularly impressed with the work rate of the team and the way they stepped up to the challenge laid down by the opposition.
Player of the match was Iza MP for her tremendous all-round performance.
Mrs Butt’s team
Having met Dean Close in the recent IAPS tournament Mrs Butt’s team made a statement in the first few minutes of the game with a well worked goal from Pippa P. The team linked some beautifully timed passes all the way from Pip K in defence through Millie B and Marnie in the midfield for Thea E to capitalise with another goal.
Elizabeth maintained the work rate in defence with Mary having plenty of work to do if what was becoming a very competitive and an end to end match. Olivia G held her position brilliantly and pushed out on some well executed Short Corners.
Millie B chased down the Dean Close short corners scuppering any chances of a clean strike on goal and also put the ball in the back of the goal to add to the score. Marnie P put two further goals on the scoresheet and was deservedly named player of the match by the opposition for her overall performance in every area of the pitch.
It was a fantastic effort and a performance to be proud of from King’s Hawford to seal the win by just one goal against quality opposition.
Mrs Beech’s team
In a closely contested Year Five hockey match between King’s Hawford A’s and Dean Close, both teams began with a cautious pace, seeing most of the action concentrated in midfield. The first half saw balanced play, with sporadic breakaways from each side.
The momentum shifted in the second half as King’s Hawford took control of possession. Rosie anchored the defence with strong clearances, while Adelyn and Ariana made impressive runs down the wings, creating offensive opportunities. Charlotte, making her debut as goalkeeper, showcased her skills with some excellent clearances.
Florrie and Jasmine displayed great chemistry in the centre, with Florrie at midfield and Jasmine up front, supported well by Maysie and Annie. King’s Hawford put consistent pressure on the Dean Close defence, leading to two well-earned goals—one a sweeping drive into the corner and the other a powerful strike. The game concluded with a King’s Hawford victory.
Player of the match was Ariana
Match Report by Ariana
With me as captain, Hawford mounted a spirited attack from the start although the first half wasn’t our finest half. We were passing the ball around nicely. Charlotte made amazing saves throughout the game. Rosie and the rest of the defence made amazing tackles not letting our opposing team get near our goal. Jasmine and Maysie were playing very nicely down the left hand side. Me (Ariana) and Adeylin were getting in great space and stayed in our positions. Beautiful move down the left hand side Jasmine passed it across the goal and Florrie scored a goal. We had another great shot at goal but it was just saved by Dean Close’s goal keeper. Annie did some brilliant work in defence. Our attack was permanently strong and overall Hawford played extremely well which lead us winning 2-0 and I got player of the match
